I often talk about how my mom made me laugh. But there is one memory that stands out above the rest. It is a ridiculous thing, but damn it was funny.
I was a teenager... mom and I were heading into town and were driving on Slocumb Street in Goldsboro. Some of you from Wayne County may know where we were when the laughter started. We had gone further on Slocumb than we normally drove. We must have been headed somewhere specific. We drove past a funeral home on the right, and mom says "You know they have a drive up window." I whip my head around and just as we pass I see a window on the side with a covering for cars. I spin around and look at mom horrified! I exclaim "What!!!????" She looks at me with a "what is your problem?" look. She says "Yeah, so you can drive up and view people in the casket." Now looking back I still think this is very distasteful and rather morbid. But at the time I let out a big sigh of relief and said "oh, thank god! I thought you meant it was a window to drive up and drop off."
At this point my mom looks at me and we both erupt into the loudest, most ridiculous fit of laughter. Instantly tears are pouring down our faces. Mom had to pull over into a parking lot on Slocumb because she couldn't drive through her tears. And we just sat there holding our stomachs heaving at the idea of people pulling up to drop off their deceased loved ones at a drive-thru window.
And then we were on our way... giggling for the rest of the day. And for years later as well. :)
